How to know if you should blog or vlog

June 8, 2018

Hey Inquisitive writers! So today I will be writing about how to know if you want to blog or vlog. I think they’re both a great way to express yourself and your passions, but they do contrast a bit.

**These are just my opinions, you don’t have to follow them. I am only suggesting them**

1: Do you want to be anonymous?

If you want to stay anonymous or just don’t feel like talking to a camera, then blogging would be more of a good option for you. In another sense, I feel like when you vlog you connect more with your audience because it’s as if you are talking to them. Though if you like talking aloud more than typing vlogging is more for you.

2: Do you want website variety?

What I mean by this is if you want to blog, there is more of a variety of websites you can choose to create your blog, such as,, Wix, Squarespace, Blogger, and more. I started on, then I switched to a self-hosted site. Youtube is the main vlogging platform, which most vloggers are on. So if you want to vlog, Youtube would be the only site I’d turn to. On the other hand, there are more options for people who want to blog on the internet (by the way I recommend the WordPress community of sites 🙂

3: Are you more comfortable editing videos or designing a website?

Even though not all Youtubers edit their videos, it is a common trend in many vloggers out there. To me, that’s similar to designing your own website. Though, if you are just getting started on blogging, I’d recommend a simply blogging platform like, as you don’t have to design your website as extensively if you were to go self-hosted. I personally like picking out themes and images for my blog posts, but it does take time. But if you really aren’t that internet savvy, I’d get someone to design your blog for you.

Though you can put a header image on your Youtube channel that you can design to customize it. It’s all about what you’re more comfortable with. I, for one, don’t even know how to use iMovie or Garageband. So I stick with blogging 😂

But even if you choose blogging or vlogging, there are some similarities

  • Tags on Youtube, tags and awards on blogging (mainly on WordPress)
  • Thumbnails on Youtube videos, header images on blog posts
  • You can have a sponsored post on Youtube and a sponsored post on your blog
  • Youtube is free to use, and is free (though not all blogging platforms are free to use)

But who says you can’t do both? Of course anyone could do both – many people do! But I wrote this post for people who don’t want to or don’t have time to do both.

Hence, writing online or talking to a camera are both forms of voicing your opinion online and connecting with either one or one thousands viewers. Whatever you choose, have fun with it!

  1. Great post! I’ve been recently considering vlogging fun events like buying my school supplies on my blog, but the one scary thing is that you have to show your face, and that’s especially hard after writing behind a screen for so long.
I feel like I could do both, but its very scary to actually start doing it.

  2. Nice post… recently I’ve been getting an itch to vlog but I don’t think I really have the time for that… and I do want to maintain a certain level of anonymity even though I been itching to post pics of myself on my blog… thanks for the information makes weighing the options so much better…

    1. Maybe you could sometimes post videos of yourself on your blog, so you don’t have to commit to anything. Also you’re welcome!

        1. Yo I swear when I had free in 2015 I was able to post videos (for example in this post: ) AND I was able to use the community forums freely – but now that’s not possible for users. It’s like they’re taking away these things that were there before.

          1. Things are ever changing I guess. Would have loved to benefit from all the resources available then. Now it’s so restricted so you must buy a pkg if you want the full blogging experience.

      1. I hope I’m not duplicating a response… but I don’t think I can upload bids on the free version of WordPress. .. but I would Def. Look into it…

  3. Love this post!
Blogging has been one of my most addicting hobbies so far. Yet, since my husband and I have been filming travel music videos the past few months, I do have vlogging on my agenda now as well. I will hopefully start the coming week -Keeping my fingers crossed that I can make it happen. Besides it being something I can enjoy with my husband together, I really hope it will step up my game. 🙂
Please don’t take away my thunder. 😛 I am so thrilled to put my plans into action.

  4. Nice post. I’ve been meaning to get into vlogging because it looks like so much fun. It amazes me how people manage to do both. The time and dedication it takes is insane.

p.s. I nominated you for The Libester Award on my page 🙂

    1. I personally can’t devote that much time online honestly. Blogging is already taking up a chunk of my time. Not that it’s a bad thing, I loved blogging. Thanks for the nomination! Though I run an award-free blog. Can I just answer in the comment section of your blog?

      1. Of course you can! Reloading to the nomination is completely optional 🙂 . Agreed with what you said about it taking up a chunk of your time. Even just posting once a week takes up more time than you think it would.

  5. I wish I could vlog! Maybe someday but right now, I don’t think that I have the right amount of confidence to try. But to be honest, I can’t see myself enjoying it more than blogging though. Cool post, it’ll really help out people who don’t know which one to choose!❤️

    1. If you really want to, go for it! At least when you blog and vlog you can an audience from two different sources!

  6. This post is so cool! I honestly feel like I could do both but I’m not really into the vlogging kind of stuff. It was more of a twelve year old me.
